Florida legislature passes bill to expand scholarship for poor students

TAMPA, Fla. – On May 2, the Florida legislature delivered a great victory to Florida’s low-income families by passing SB/HB 653, which expands the Corporate Tax Credit (CTC) scholarship program for low-income families.

Step Up For Students, an initiative of the Corporate Tax Credit program, commends the great leadership in the Florida legislature for delivering school choice to an additional 6,000 poor students.

“We wish to thank the Florida legislature for their incredible leadership in passing this bill, especially the bill sponsors Representative Trey Traviesa (R-Tampa) and Senator Don Gaetz (R-Niceville),” said Denise Lasher, spokeswoman for Step Up For Students. “This is truly a historical day in the school choice movement in Florida and throughout the nation.”

The overwhelmingly bipartisan vote comprised of 50 percent of the House Black Caucus and 36 percent of all House Democrats. This clearly demonstrates that parental choice for low-income families is rapidly becoming a universal cause.[/x_text]
