Rosen Hotels & Resorts celebrates 15 years of supporting Step Up For Students

OCTOBER 3, 2017 | ORLANDO, FL

Step Up For Students announced today that Rosen Hotels & Resorts, owner and operator of seven quality properties in the Orlando market, is marking its 15th consecutive year contributing to the Step Up For Students scholarship program.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts, led by President & COO Harris Rosen, has committed $140,000 to the Step Up For Students Scholarship Program for the 2017-18 school year. Rosen is one of the earliest donors to Step Up For Students.

Step Up For Students helps administer the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, which provides K-12th grade scholarships to qualified lower-income families throughout Florida. The tax credit program was created by the Florida Legislature in 2001 and is funded by corporations that receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for their contributions. The program allows recipients to choose between a scholarship to help with private school tuition and fees, or a transportation scholarship to assist with transportation costs to an out-of-district public school.

John Kirtley, founder and board chairman of Step Up, partnered with Rosen for the first time in 2003. Harris Rosen, a fervent believer in a quality education, had initiated a program to provide educational opportunities for the underserved neighborhood of Tangelo Park in Orlando.

For nearly 25 years, Rosen has provided free preschool for all children ages 2 through 4 who live in the Tangelo Park neighborhood. In addition, all the youngsters who graduate from high school and are accepted to any Florida state university, community college, or vocational school are provided with an all-expense paid education. Last year, he also launched this program in the underserved Parramore neighborhood of Orlando.

“I have long been a huge admirer of what Mr. Rosen has done for children in Tangelo Park,” said Kirtley. “He truly understands what it takes to support children to successful outcomes. It is an honor to have his company as a partner with Step Up.”

In the years since Rosen’s first contribution, the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program has grown substantially. Rising demand for scholarships have been met with increasingly generous contributions from donors. Florida’s program cap grew from $50 million in 2002-03 to $559 million in 2016-17.

“At Rosen Hotels & Resorts, we believe in providing hope. Hope for a better education. Hope for a brighter future,” said Rosen. “Our goal with providing K-12 scholarships through our partnership with Step Up For Students is to help change the lives of thousands of Florida schoolchildren. We’re committed to ending the cycle of poverty that holds many families back.”

Rosen Hotels & Resorts contribution will fund more than 20 scholarships in the 2017-18 school year. Over the past 15 years, Rosen Hotels & Resorts has contributed $1.25 million to Step Up For Students, providing more than 260 scholarships.

“Rosen Hotels & Resorts recognizes the importance of a quality education and understands that every child learns differently. Finding the right learning environment for each child is important in a child’s educational success,” said Doug Tuthill, president of Step Up For Students. “On behalf of Step Up, and the thousands of families benefiting from this program, we thank the Rosen company and sincerely appreciate its generosity.”

For the 2017-18 school year, Step Up For Students will serve more than 100,000 students throughout Florida with tuition scholarships valued at up to $6,343 per student for K-5th grade, $6,631 for 6th-8th grade and $6,920 for 9th-12th grade. More than 1,700 private schools participate in the scholarship program statewide. In Orange County this school year, more than 135 schools participate in the program with more than 9,500 students benefiting.

About Step Up For Students

Step Up For Students is a nonprofit organization that helps manage the income-based Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Students who qualify for the national free or reduced-price lunch program, or those who are homeless or in foster or out-of-home care, may qualify. The scholarship program provides tuition assistance to the private school of their parents’ choice or financial assistance to offset the transportation cost to an out-of-district public school. Since 2001, Step Up has awarded more than 680,000 scholarships.

Step Up also helps administer the state-funded Gardiner Scholarship Program for Florida students with certain special needs. With the Gardiner Scholarship, recipients may use the funds for a variety of approved services including private tutoring, occupational therapy, instructional materials and other services.
