Step Up For Students announced today The Main Street America Group has donated $600,000 which will provide scholarships to more than 100 low-income K-12schoolchildren in Florida.

The Jacksonville-based regional property/casualty insurance company, provides products and services for individuals, families and small businesses across the country exclusively through independent agents, has funded more than 190 scholarships since partnering with Step Up, which helps administer the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program. The program is funded by corporations that receive dollar-for-dollar tax credits for their contributions.

“We are proud to invest in Florida’s youth, particularly through providing educational opportunities for financially disadvantaged children so they can find the school that best meets their learning needs,” said Tom Van Berkel, Main Street America’s chairman and CEO. “Main Street America’s corporate culture focuses on making an impact in the communities where our employees live and work and we are excited to play an important role in supporting the development of some of Florida’s future leaders.”

More than 1,600 private schools participate in the scholarship program statewide. Scholars may also choose a $500 scholarship to offset the cost of transportation to an out-of-county public school.

“We are grateful for corporate partners like The Main Street America Group for their support of Step Up For Students and their commitment to making a difference in the community,” said Doug Tuthill, Step Up For Students president. “Thanks to their generosity, more Florida families will have options for their children.”
