Meet Kayla

While attending her neighborhood school growing up, Kayla felt like she didn’t belong and wasn’t being challenged. Her mother believed she’d benefit from more individualized attention but couldn’t afford tuition at schools offering those environments.

Then, she found Step Up For Students! Kayla received the Florida Tax Credit scholarship for lower-income K-12 students, which afforded her the opportunity to find a better educational setting. At her new school, Kayla was comfortable being herself, became more excited about academics, and was motivated by her educators to focus on her future. Now she’s a sophomore at Florida State College in Jacksonville, where she’s studying to become a physical therapist.

Thanks to her Step Up scholarship, Kayla’s future is BRIGHT! And she’s not the only one—more Step Up students than EVER are college bound.

According to the Urban Institute, students who utilize a Florida Tax Credit scholarship for more than four years are up to 99% more likely than their public school peers to attend a four-year college, and 45% more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree!
