Eligibility Requirements

For the 2020-21 school year, a family of four could have an income of nearly $80,000 annually to be eligible for our private school scholarships. For this school year, which is quickly coming to a close, the scholarships for tuition and fees were worth as much as $7,000 per child, depending on where students lived and their grade level. We expect this income level to change for the upcoming school year, opening the scholarships to more Florida families than ever before.

With the April 26, 2021 passage of new legislation related to our scholarships, we anticipate the income level for the 2021-22 school year will rise to a household income eligibility criteria of nearly $100,000 for a family of 4.

If signed into law, these changes will go into effect on July 1, 2021.

If you think you may qualify under the new guidelines, we recommend applying today.

Age Eligibility:

  • Students entering kindergarten must be 5 on or before Sept. 1.
  • Students entering first grade must be 6 on or before Sept. 1.

The Opportunity

What can a scholarship do for my child?

Step Up For Students offers two scholarships that are based on your household’s income: the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship and the Family Empowerment Scholarship.

The Florida Tax Credit Scholarship gives families a choice of financial assistance toward private school tuition and fees, or helps with transportation costs for students to attend a public school different than the one they are assigned to. The Family Empowerment Scholarship may be used towards private school tuition and fees.

Both scholarships are based on financial need and not how well your child does in school. The application is the same for both scholarships. We determine if you are eligible, and for which scholarship.
